Jail Inmates Help Stranded Drivers

McMINNVILLE, Oregon -- Jail inmates pitched in to help stranded drivers and socked-in elderly residents Sunday after snow and ice covered Yamhill County. Sheriff's deputies and inmates used 4x4 vehicles to reach drivers who needed help installing tire chains or clearing snow for blocked vehicles. They also carried firewood to isolated elderly shut-ins and helped residents in any way they could.

In one case, an elderly woman in need of groceries was unable to get to the store. Capt. Ken Summers said a deputy and inmate picked her up and took her to the store to pick up groceries. "We (also) picked up several motorists after their cars had gotten stranded and gave them rides home," Summers said.

Yamhill County residents who are in need of immediate help are asked to call 503-434-6500.

Summers said the inmates who were participating in the program aren't dangerous and Sheriff Jack Crabtree said they were anxious to repay their debt to society. "This program is good for the citizens, good for the inmates and good for the community as a whole," Crabtree said.
