His face contorted in rage and fear, a cigarette hanging from his
mouth and a gun clenched in his hand, a man leaps from his car and
starts firing at police.

The images look as though they could be from a film - but they are terrifyingly real.

Armed robbery suspect Robert Sylvester, believed to be 57, was shot
by U.S. police in the middle of the Interstate 55 highway in Illinois
yesterday after a car chase that hit speeds of 90mph.

He was rushed to hospital - but was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm last night.

David Proeber, a photographer with local newspaper Bloomington
Pantagraph, captured his last moments of freedom in this astonishing
sequence of pictures - before being forced to duck down inside his car
and hit the accelerator to dodge the flying bullets.

Both the front tyres on Sylvester's SUV were punctured as he drove
over 'stop sticks' during the desperate high-speed chase - and when
police finally cornered him, he came out firing.

Proeber told the newspaper he stopped about 150ft down the hard shoulder as he heard gunshots.

'I looked up in the rear view mirror as I was braking and saw police running toward him,' he said.

'His eyes met mine. The next thing I knew, he leaped over the barricade and took a few steps at the car.'

Proeber snapped a desperate 47 shots before racing to safety.

Sylvester was a suspect in the robbery of Check 'n' Go at Market and
Hinshaw Streets in Bloomington, Illinois, police said - as well as four
other armed robberies in the Twin City area.

The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Sylvester led police on a high-speed chase from Lexington to I-39
before he stopped on I-55/74 just north of Normal Community West High
School in the town of Normal.

His shocked nephew Gary Sylvester said his uncle was an
ironworker for about 30 years with a union local and had worked for
various contractors, according to the Pantagraph.

The family was 'just still in shock. It doesn’t feel real,' he said.

He said 30 or so family and friends had rushed to the BroMenn
Regional Medical Centre last night to be at Sylvester's side as he died.

According to McLean County Court records, Sylvester had been convicted
of domestic battery in April of this year - and was on probation.
