Madonna's 'soulmate' Alex Rodriguez is weeks away from buying a New
York penthouse apartment two blocks from the superstar's - in a bid to
be close to her.

Speculation of a romantic relationship between the pair has been
rife after the baseball star has been seen out and about with the
superstar on a number of occasions.

The 33-year-old millionaire baseball player is to buy the Central Park West penthouse, worth an estimated £40million.

'Alex knows that this is a difficult time for Madonna, especially as she has children,' a source said.

'So he thought this was the best way to be close to her without being
too intrusive. He is completely into her and willing to be patient
while she sorts everything out.

'All he cares about is just being close to her,' a source added.

Rodriguez is in the final stages of sealing the deal on his lavish
four-bedroom pad. The building is home to many stars, including Sting -
who, ironically, introduced Guy Ritchie to Madonna in 1998.

Meanwhile Madonna, 50, is hoping she can have a natural child with Rodriguez, despite her age.

The singer is planning her future with the American baseball player, it emerged last night.

There is no suggestion that Madonna has to date had a physical relationship with Rodriguez.

However, a friend said: 'She thinks he's physically a great specimen.
And if she is going to have another child, he would be the ideal man to
bring one to her.'

The singer has kept the relationship secret while her divorce from Ritchie is thrashed out.

Madonna and Rodriguez are expected to go public with their feelings for one another in the coming months.

The Daily Mail has learned that she is hoping to enlarge her family with the sportsman, known in the U.S. as A-Rod.

Rodriguez has pledged to back the singer's passion to spread the Kabbalah philosophy around the world.

He has made promises to her to write a range of sports-themed books to
bring the message of Kabbalah to young boys. Madonna has already
brought out a similar range of books for girls.

Rodriguez is planning to join her on a 'spiritual' trip to Malawi after her current world tour ends.

Madonna is more adamant than ever that she wants to adopt another child from Malawi.

She had been in the process of adopting three-year-old Mercy James from
the east African nation when her relationship with Ritchie started to
falter this summer.

Rodriguez has also promised a gift to her of a his-and-hers gym complex near her Manhattan apartment.

It has also emerged that Madonna is throwing what is ostensibly a 'Kabbalah weekend' to introduce Rodriguez to her children.

Friends say she has devised her own five-point plan to test whether Rodriguez really is the one for her.

A friend of the singer said: 'First, when Alex says he is going to
call, Madonna checks that he calls when he says he will. Guy would
always call late or not at all. Madonna has also tested Alex on his
knowledge of Kabbalah text and he did remarkably well.

'She has also spoken to him at length about his attitude to money
and thankfully she found they shared similar views - that just because
you earn a lot of money, it doesn't have to mean you give it all away
to your siblings.

'Fourthly, she wanted to test how observant he was in relation to her.
She asked him what outfits and jewellery she was wearing on their first
three times they met each other - and he passed with flying colours.

'Lastly, she spoke to him at length about what he felt about being public with someone more famous than him.

'He gave the right answer - that he saw her as a spiritual being and not a famous person.'

Madonna was named as 'the other woman' in divorce papers filed by Rodriguez's wife Cynthia last year.

Just a few days ago, she was spotted again with Rodriguez dining out in
New York. In recent months, they have become increasingly close and
have spent hours on the phone to one another.
