A hit-and-run driver admitted killing a young mother-to-be and her unborn baby after taking part in a drugs-fuelled binge.

Eight-months pregnant Keely Hartnett, 21, was weeks from giving birth when she was killed in a head-on crash with Paul Cross.

Cross, 21, who had been smoking cannabis and taking cocaine just hours
before the fatal accident, yesterday pleaded guilty to death by
dangerous driving on October 7 last year.

Miss Hartnett, a healthcare assistant from Rochford, Essex, was killed
instantly after Cross's blue Peugeot 306 hit her boyfriend Phil
Roberts' Ford Escort in Southend, Essex.

Miss Hartnett 's unborn son, set to be named Riley, also died in the smash.

Cross also admitted four counts of causing grievous bodily harm on the
same day after Mr Roberts suffered a broken leg in the collision and
three passengers in the Peugeot were also injured.

Back seat passenger Abbie Bunch, 16, was left in a wheelchair after
suffering severe spinal and bowel injuries, and Ashleigh Richardson
suffered back and bowel injuries.

Front seat passenger Jake Brookes, 18, was left with a fractured hand and foot as well as abdominal injuries.

Basildon Crown Court, heard how Cross had no licence, no MOT, no tax and failed to stop at the scene of the accident.

A spokeswoman for Essex Police said his car hit the central
reservation, took off in to the air and crashed down into the Ford
Escort.

Relatives said Miss Hartnett, who had been working at Southend
Hospital and dreamed of becoming a paramedic, had been out for the
evening with Mr Roberts.

Speaking after the crash, Ms Hartnett's cousin Phil Packer said she had
been really excited about becoming a mother for the first time.

He said: 'Her life was really on track and going well. All her family and friends are just devastated.

'She would have been a great mum. She was over the moon and had been buying all the different things she needed.

'She did such a caring and giving job at the hospital. She was always working hard to help others, especially the elderly.'

Expert toxicology witnesses will be brought in to give evidence about
whether Cross's cannabis and cocaine consumption affected his driving.

The judge adjourned the case for sentencing.
