4 Underground Juggernauts Trying To Form Super Group?!?!?!
Tis' the season for the supergroup. First we have Kanye, Pharrell and Lupe talking about their CRS album, then you had Nelly, T-Pain, Akon and Pharrell talking about doing a group. Now, the rumor on the street (okay okay....its not the streets, its on the internet) is that 4 underground heavyweights are going to try and release an album as a super group. Just who are the group members though and are they collectively large enough to move units?
- Joe Budden
- Royce Da 5'9"
- Crooked I
- Joell Ortiz
Check out the video below from Joe Budden's video blog where the 4 emcees are brainstorming and contemplating whether or not they could really pull this off.
The thing that is crazy about this supergroup, is that all 4 emcees were at one point, signed to major labels and either had their albums shelved or they were dropped completely from the label. Joe Budden had mild success with his first album and had "The Growth" shelved and was eventually dropped after several years. Royce Da 5'9" had major label drama with Loud Records and at one time was going to sign with Shady but had beef with Em. Crooked I sat on the sidelines of Death Row for YEARS after the labels twilight had ended. Joell Ortiz had signed to Aftermath several years ago and never released and album or any singles for the label.
So what does this mean for the so-called supergroup? It means that collectively, the 4 might have enough of a fan base to approach a major label again to release the album nationally the way it should happen. Will that happen though? Not a chance. These guys have been burnt pretty bad and want nothing to do with major labels and their way of doing things. Let's see if it goes down though.
