A teen sex fiend who attacked four women after becoming obsessed with ultra-violent video game Grand Theft Auto has been locked up indefinitely.

Ryan Chinnery, 19, prowled streets in his car targeting innocent women he thought were prostitutes - imitating scenes from the controversial game in which a man drives around and attacks call girls.

Chinnery stalked the terrified girls - none of them prostitutes - during a two-month reign of terror, Maidstone Crown Court was told.

The attacks in Ashford, Kent, came after he spent hours playing on the game, which has faced calls to be banned for encouraging copycat crimes.

He began hunting women in June last year - setting upon his first victim under a railway bridge, pulling down her trousers and groping her breasts.

A month later he stalked another woman, dragged her along a path and into a river before he was scared off by passers-by.

Chinnery set upon a third woman as she made her way home from work - grabbing her arm and only fleeing when another man approached.

The fourth and final attack came when he grabbed a 42-year-old woman around the throat as she walked home from a friend's home at 2am.

The victim broke her arm in the struggle then had her clothes torn off, was sexually assaulted and then could only watch on in horror as the teen performed a sex act in front of her.

Police were able to get Chinnery's DNA from the woman and he was finally arrested days later.

Officers found a copy of the 18-certificate Grand Theft Auto during a swoop on the home Chinnery shared with his girlfriend - and he initially insisted to detectives that he had been playing on his computer at the time of the attacks.

Prosecutor Eleanor Laws told a jury last month how Chinnery's obsession with Grand Theft Auto, which has sold some 35million copies, 'may go some way to explaining his attitude towards women'.

Miss Laws added: 'Prostitutes in it can be exposed to violence.

'There may be some connection with the defendant admitting spending a lot of time playing that game.'

Judge Philip Statman said: 'What most troubles me is the mirror conduct between pornography and that which he later does.

'It is as if spurring on comes from the pornographic material. I know part of this case referred to something called Grand Theft Auto.

'While it appears the defendant does not accept it influenced his conduct on that particular evening, it could not have helped him, I would have thought, in all the circumstances of the case.

'Stranger attacks, even in today's society, are mercifully rare, but when they occur they cause the utmost distress, not just to the victims but to the community as a whole.'

The judge said Chinnery had an unhealthy interest in pornography and fantasy sex.

He added: 'You have sought to dominate and humiliate women to gain sexual satisfaction. You thrive on the feeling of power and control.'

A probation report mentioned his arousal at the thought of committing a sex act and having sex with a stranger.

Chinnery continued to maintain his innocence and denied three sex assaults at the crown court - but broke down in tears and changed his plea on two of the charges to guilty halfway through his trial in September.

The prosecution agreed to leave the remaining two charges on the court file. He had previously admitted a charge of assault by penetration on another woman.

When police searched his home they found a poem he had written about a prostitute 'wanting more' and ending with the line: 'Think the hore would stop, but the hore want more.'

The judge found that a sentence for public protection was necessary because of Chinnery's danger to the public.

He will serve a minimum of four years, less 14 months spent on remand, and will not be released until the parole board decides it is safe to do so.

The judge said he if had imposed a determinate sentence it would have been one of eight years imprisonment.

Chinnery was banned from working with children indefinitely and will remain on the sex offenders' register for life.
