Lil Wayne Named World's Top Hip-Hop/Rap Artist

At last night's (November 9) 2008 World Music Awards, multi-platinum superstar Lil' Wayne was named the World's Top Hip-Hop/Rap Artist.

Billboard.biz reports that the show took place in Monte Carlo featuring performances by such artists as Beyonce and Kid Rock.

Also taking home awards were Akon, who was named Internet Artist of the Year and R&B/Pop artist Leona Lewis taking home female Pop artist honors after she outsold Mariah Carey and Madonna worldwide.

The night's highest honor, Top-Selling Artist, went to UK band Coldplay whose latest album "Viva La Vida" topped charts worldwide in 2008.

World Music Awards are handed out based on global sales figures.
