Survivors of Spanair flight LH 2554, which crashed in Madrid
yesterday killing at least 153 people, have talked about the horrific
moments after the plane came down.

“As I lifted my head, I saw bodies everywhere,” Columbian emergency physician Liga Palomino told Spanish newspaper ‘El Pais’.

In the first moments following the crash, Palomino was unconcious. The
explosion of the fuel tanks awoke her. She said: “I heard an enormous
sound and ran away.”

Palomino was one of the few survivors. She was sitting in the ninth row
and when the plane split in two, she was thrown from her seat into a
nearby river.

The Columbian doctor suffered burn wounds and superficial cuts to her face. She also had to undergo surgery for a broken femur.

Palomino was sitting on the plane with her husband, Jose, and
sister-in-law. The trio were going to Gran Canaria to celebrate her
42nd birthday on Sunday. Palomino’s husband survived and is recovering
in hospital but her sister-in-law is still missing.

Beatriz Reyes was another passenger lucky enough to survive the
catastrophic crash. The 41-year-old was on her way home from a holiday
in South Africa when tragedy struck.

“I could feel that something wasn’t right with the aeroplane. The next
thing I know, I lifted my head and there was no ceiling above me.”
After the crash, she used a fellow passenger’s mobile to call her
sister and tell her she was fine.

An employee at the airport where the plane crashed told media in Spain
that she had escorted an eight-year-old boy and an eleven-year-old girl
from the wreckage.

“The boy was fine, he complained only of pains and was busy trying to
find his parents,” she reported. The girl also repeatedly asked for her
mother. According to reports, the boy was sent to the hospital with a
broken leg, while the girl was put in intensive care. A six-year-old
boy also reportedly survived the crash.

Investigations into the cause of the accident continued on Wednesday.
The restrictions on media access concerning the investigation have
raised suspicions that human error may have contributed to the
catastrophe.
