A newlywed wept today as she told how she saw her husband drown in front of her on their honeymoon.

Russell Hawkes was swept out to sea by a strong undercurrent at the Spanish resort of Fuengirola.

Surfers alerted by the screams of his 31-year-old bride Danielle pulled
him unconscious from the water but were unable to revive him.

Last night, Mrs Hawkes said that although the sea had been rough there
was no red flag flying and no warning about undercurrents. A first aid
hut on the beach was closed.

One of the surfers who tried to revive 39-year-old Mr Hawkes criticised
Spanish police, saying they 'didn't seem to want to get their shoes wet
and just left us to it'.

Mr Hawkes, a welder, from Basildon, Essex, married Danielle in her home town of Luton in August.

They postponed their honeymoon to combine it with a family holiday with her parents and brother.

The tragedy happened on Monday. Mrs Hawkes said: 'Russell was such a
lovely man and a perfect husband. I can't quite believe what's
happened. He was only up to his waist in the water and I was paddling
nearby. One minute he was okay and the next he was being dragged away
from me.'

The beach was deserted except for a handful of surfers because of overcast weather and rough sea.

Mrs Hawkes, an insurance worker, said: 'There was no red flag and no
warning about undercurrents. The minute I saw Russell in difficulties,
I started screaming.

'I ran to a surfer who was nearby but he didn't understand English
and a Red Cross first aid hut on the beach was closed. It was only
after another group of surfers heard my cries for help that anyone
reacted.

'They got him out of the water and dragged him on to the sand. I
kept on saying to them, "Don't stop, don't stop, we've just married" as
they tried to revive him.

'The paramedics managed to get a pulse when they arrived but they lost
it immediately. The last image etched on my mind is of the man I love
lying on the beach with a sheet over him while the water was virtually
lapping at his ankles.'

She added: 'I'm furious there was no warning about the state of the
sea and the Red Cross hut was closed. We were told it was because it
was out of season, but it's half-term.'

Surfer Ivan Rosado, 22, said: 'About eight of us had to pull him
out of the water using our boards. The two local police officers at the
scene didn't seem to want to get their shoes wet and just left us to
it. It was disgusting.'

No one from the local police was available for comment.
