Kanye West's Family Speaks On His Mom's Death

Last night (October 21) on Access Hollywood, two members of Kanye West's family provided intimate details about the death of West's mother Dr. Donda West.

Donda West died November 10th, 2007 as a result of a heart attack which is suspected to have been brought on as a result of plastic surgery.

Yolanda Anderson (Donda’s niece) and her mother Jean spoke to Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson about the day of her surgery.

"Shaun Robinson: First of all, lets talk about the surgery. She went in for a breast reduction, a tummy tuck and liposuction.

Jean: Yes.

SR: So, how long did the surgery actually take?

Yolonda: 8 hours.

J: No. No we did not expect it to take that long. There was quite a few things going on during that length of time."

Jean goes on to tell Robinson that there were several complications on the day of the surgery including the anesthesiologist not showing up and a replacement being called in.

Following the surgery, Jean says that the staff at Dr. Jan Adams office, the surgeon who performed the surgery, had a difficult time waking West up. At this point, Jean put a phone to her ear and played her Kanye's song "Hey Mama."

"I put the phone up to her ear. Donda listen, listen, wake up, listen, Kanye's singing to you to wake up, listen."

West eventually woke up and was immediately sent home according to family members.

The family goes on to say that a nurse assigned by Adams to go home with West didn't show up and she passed away the day after the surgery.

Yolanda says that if Adams had done a physical exam on West prior to the surgery they would have found she wasn't in good enough physical condition to proceed.

The family has campaigned strongly to pass a bill requiring medical clearance prior to elective surgery.
