The 'UNSTOPABLE' NY Giants!!!!!!!
PHILADELPHIA - Upon further review, maybe the NFC East isn't the most competitive division in football after all.
What was supposed to be the toughest group in the NFL is beginning to look like a one-team show after the Giants put a little more distance between themselves and the rest of the division.
One week after the defending champs (8-1) buried the Dallas Cowboys, they did the same to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night, holding them off, 36-31. That left Philly (5-4) tied with Dallas, three games back.
"We've got seven games left and a lot of things can change," linebacker Antonio Pierce said. "I don't see no asterisk by our names yet saying we're the division champs."
Maybe not yet, but it sure looks like it's coming. Only the Redskins (6-3) are within striking distance, and they're in a two-game hole.
Worse for the rest of the NFC East: now everything seemingly is going right for the Giants. They didn't just pound the Eagles with a rushing attack of 219 yards and suffocate them with a defense that held Brian Westbrook to 59 total yards. They also went 3-0 on replay challenges that led to two big touchdowns in the second half.
The biggest came late in the third quarter after the referee flagged Eli Manning (17-for-31, 191 yards) for crossing the line of scrimmage before completing a 17-yard pass to Kevin Boss on a third-and-10 play that would have put the Giants at the Philadelphia 3. Manning immediately went to the sidelines and told Tom Coughlin to challenge, even though he admitted, "I didn't know for sure."
Only after receivers coach Mike Sullivan and quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer saw the replay in the coaches' booth and confirmed that Manning's back foot was either on the line of scrimmage or behind it did Coughlin throw the red challenge flag.
"It was a big play at the time," Manning said. "It was a big drive for us to go and get a touchdown. I'm glad Coach Coughlin decided to take a risk on me.
The replay official overturned the penalty, and two plays later Brandon Jacobs (126 yards, two touchdowns) rumbled in for a 3-yard score that gave the Giants a 27-24 lead. They never trailed from there.
"I think the way the rule is written, it was worth taking a shot at it," Manning added. "If you have one toe on the line of scrimmage, then it's a legal pass. I thought it was worth the risk."
It was a four-point swing as the Giants would have trailed 24-23 had the penalty stood and they settled for a field goal. They added John Carney's third field goal on their next drive, and then got another Jacobs touchdown with 9:30 remaining in the game, giving them a 36-24 lead.
GIANTS 8-1!! LETS DO IT AGAIN!!
